CO- Show 12

Under the scream of an airplane above, I am beckoned by two stories of floor-to-ceiling windows, glowing electric violet. I start to feel the bass low in my ribs as I get closer to the crowd. I see mesh, leather, platforms, animal print, and lots of black. The atmosphere is peak chic, and I would expect nothing less: I am at CO- Presents’ 12th iteration of their popular Performance + Party series.

Performance/party: Seattle-based collaborative CO- launches Show 9 in Los Angeles

After a long week — and as all of Los Angeles can attest, a long January — I was relieved to discover that finding the venue entrance was the hardest part of attending CO-’s Show 9.

Dance Steps Out

When the double-wide doors of Mutuus Studio swing open, we know the next performer is about to begin. Drinks in hand, the crowd gathers around doors and windows, peering out as a car pulls up, its headlights illuminating the courtyard. Tariq Mitri steps from the vehicle and headstands in a bucket of water, emerging to shake his sopping head wildly side to side, glistening droplets spraying into the night.

CO- Show 7

Gooey, supportive partnering emerges in the middle of a DJ set. Dancers Maia Melene D’urfé and Althea Alexander rotate like two planets that have just engulfed each other. The audience forms a semicircle around them as they merge. These converged dancers build spatially, maintaining shared weight through widespread lunges and expanded arms. Deep, ambient drones and crumbling rock sounds begin to infiltrate the soundtrack.

thousands of Seeds

Of Us, a new dance piece created and performed by local performers Jenna Eady and Tariq Mitri, is a deceptively simple and honest evening that is in turns moving, heartfelt, vigorous and delicate, but often all at once. Both Eady and Mitri have deep familial connections to the Palestinian region—a region that has been very much in the news since October 2023, and that still weighs heavily on the collective imagination...

Antidote for Apathy

Everyone working to create a more humane world is what is keeping me going right now. The grief and fatigue is very real for me as I assume it is for you, too. The infographic “Callings and Roles for Collective Liberation” from social justice organization The Slow Factory motivated me to consider the contributions of performing artists in this moment of cultural upheaval.
